Permit questions
Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to common Minnesota Permit to Carry questions.
Can I complete the whole permit course online?
You can complete the classroom portion online. Minnesota still requires a live-fire qualification, so TTS pairs the online course with an in-person review and range qualification.
How long does the online course take?
It varies by student, but you should expect about 2-3 hours. You can start and stop the course, so if you are interrupted, you can come back to it.
Where is the range qualification?
Range qualifications are held at The Modern Sportsman in Burnsville.
What do I have to do to pass the shooting qualification?
The main focus of the shooting qualification is showing that you can safely handle a pistol. There is an accuracy element, but if you handle your pistol safely, our instructors can teach even a novice shooter.
What does the course cover?
The course covers pistol fundamentals, safe handling, Minnesota carry law, lawful use of force, concealed carry considerations, stress effects, and the required shooting qualification.
When do I get the certificate of completion so I can apply for my permit to carry?
Once you pass the shooting qualification and show your ID to the instructor, they will provide the completed certificate.
Do I need my own handgun?
You do not always need your own handgun. A loaner may be available at no charge for the permit class, and students only pay for ammunition if they need it.
How long is a Minnesota permit valid?
New and renewal permits are valid for five years from the date of issuance.
